A Day Trip to Delphi from Arachova

Delphi is around 10 kilometres from Arachova — a drive of just 10–15 minutes. This makes the archaeological site of Delphi one of the easiest day trips for visitors staying in Arachova: there is no need to change accommodation or follow a rigid schedule. Here is what is worth knowing before you set off.
What to see at the archaeological site
The Temple of Apollo, with its six surviving Doric columns, was where the Pythia delivered her prophecies. A little higher up, the Ancient Theatre —built in the 4th century BC, overlooking the olive-covered plain— hosted performances of ancient plays during the Pythian Games. Today, it is used only for rare special events. Higher still stands the Stadium, where the Pythian Games took place. Just below the main site, in the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia (Marmaria), is the circular Tholos — one of the most photographed monuments in Greece.
Do not miss the Castalian Spring, where the Pythia, priests and pilgrims purified themselves before ascending to the oracle. It takes its name from the mythical nymph Castalia, who, while trying to escape Apollo, fell into the spring and drowned. In antiquity, the spring was dedicated to Apollo and the Muses.
The museum
Right beside the archaeological site, the Delphi Archaeological Museum houses some of Greece’s most celebrated treasures — including the bronze Charioteer and the Sphinx of Naxos. A short visit after exploring the site is well worth it, helping you put what you have seen into context.
How much time to allow
For a relaxed visit, allow 3–4 hours in total: approximately 1.5 hours for the main monuments of the ancient site, around another 45 minutes for the stadium, an hour for the museum and another 1.5 hours for Marmaria.
If you leave Arachova early, you will also have plenty of time for coffee or a meal in the village of Delphi before returning, or even in picturesque Galaxidi.
Practical tips
The archaeological site and museum open daily (except on certain public holidays), with opening hours that vary by season. Before setting off, check the current hours on the official Ministry of Culture website (odysseus.culture.gr) or at hh.gr. A combined ticket covers both the site and the museum.
Wear comfortable walking shoes — parts of the site are uphill — and bring water and sunscreen. In autumn, without the summer tour buses, the site is noticeably quieter, making for a more enjoyable visit.
Returning to Efzin
Staying at Efzin, in the centre of Arachova, puts Delphi just a few minutes away. You can leave early after breakfast and return the same afternoon for coffee in the square or a rest, followed by dinner at one of the many restaurants close to the hotel. An ideal place to begin or end a journey into the ancient world.
